Alcohol

A topic in its own right in Norway, because the rules surprise you and need planning. Alcohol is expensive, and its sale is tightly regulated.

Wine and spirits are sold only at Vinmonopolet, the state monopoly, with limited opening hours. Impossible to buy elsewhere. Beer is available in supermarkets, but beware the legal sales hours: sales are banned on weekdays after 8pm, and after 6pm on Saturdays. On Sundays it is impossible, including in the few grocery stores that open.

In brief

  • Wine and spirits: only at Vinmonopolet, limited hours.
  • Beer in supermarkets: banned after 8pm on weekdays, after 6pm on Saturdays, no Sunday sales.
  • The smart move: buy at airport duty-free for the stay.
  • Apps: KvoteAppen (customs quota).
