Trains and public transport

Norway's transport network is excellent and fully digital. Paper tickets have gone, replaced by apps, and there is a different one for each region, which is confusing at first. Here is how to find your way.

Trains are comfortable, punctual and often spectacular: the Bergen and Nordland lines are among Europe's finest. On long-distance lines, the operator depends on the route. Vy covers the Oslo area, the Bergen line and Oslo-Gothenburg. SJ Norge runs the northern lines, the Dovre line (Oslo-Trondheim) and the Nordland line (Trondheim-Bodø). Go-Ahead Nordic serves the south-west (Oslo-Kristiansand-Stavanger).

For regional buses and ferries, everything is managed at county (fylke) level, and you must download the local app to buy your ticket before boarding. Remember the right one for your destination: Ruter for Oslo and Akershus, Skyss for Bergen and Vestland, AtB for Trondheim and Trøndelag, Reis (Reis Nordland) for Bodø, Lofoten and the far north.

In brief

  • Comfortable trains; operator by route (Vy, SJ Norge, Go-Ahead).
  • “Mini-pris” tickets by booking several weeks ahead.
  • Regional bus and ferry: the county app, ticket before boarding.
  • Apps: Vy, Ruter, Skyss, AtB, Reis (by region).

Here I share my dual perspective as a Norwegian who has always lived abroad and a regular traveller to the country, facing the same practical questions as any visitor.
