Norway is dotted with toll points: motorways, tunnels, entrances to big cities. No barriers or booths, everything works by automatic reading of your number plate. You drive past, a camera reads the plate, and the bill follows. It is invisible at the time, which surprises you at first.
With a rental car, you have nothing to do during your stay: the agency collects the passages and bills you the total at the end, usually with a small handling fee. Just remember to check that statement on return.
If you come with your own vehicle registered abroad, it is up to you to plan ahead. Go to the Epass24 portal (epass24.com), the service dedicated to foreign vehicles, to register your plate and a payment method. Tolls are then charged automatically, with no nasty surprises or postal reminders months later.
In brief
- Tolls everywhere, automatic plate reading, no booths.
- Rental car: nothing to do, the agency bills the passages at the end.
- Own foreign vehicle: register plate and payment on epass24.com.
